How to Rechannel Your Energy

We all face moments in life where things feel out of control. Here is a personal story and some insight into managing those negative emotions.

The Need to Slow Down

Recently, a friend was driving as if we were headed to space. My heart was pounding, and I couldn’t shake the thought of how much I wanted to live to enjoy more of life’s pleasures, like the delicious food in my country.

I turned to my friend and said, “You can control your driving, not others. So, be on the safer side by driving slowly.”

Soon, we both began to realise the wisdom in slowing down.

Understanding What You Can and Cannot Control

In life, we often encounter external factors beyond our control:

  • You might raise your child well, only to have them bring disgrace to the family.
  • Your staff may disregard company culture.
  • A boss or customer could make your life difficult.
  • Your property may be stolen.
  • Someone you love may pass away.
  • You might experience a serious accident, or someone might damage your vehicle.

These external factors are unpredictable and out of your hands. And it’s perfectly normal for these experiences to stir up negative emotions—they’re part of being human.

What Should You Do When Negative Emotions Arise?

Rechannel Your Energy

Start by asking yourself, “Why do I feel this way?” Once you identify the root of the emotion, you can begin finding a solution.

Finding Solutions

Do you need to:

  • Call your insurance company?
  • Have a conversation with a difficult staff member?
  • Set a new goal?
  • Get support from a loved one?
  • Or maybe, shed some tears?

Yes, shedding tears can be necessary sometimes.

Emotions Are a Natural Part of Being Human

Nigerian sprinter Favour Ofili broke down in tears during the Olympics, and a spectator wisely told others to let her cry. It may have seemed harsh, but it was what she needed. We are emotional beings, and expressing our emotions rather than suppressing them is essential.

Rechanneling Energy: A Lesson From Nature

Nature is an excellent teacher. Science tells us that energy can neither be created nor destroyed.

Think about the water cycle:

  • The sun is the source of solar energy.
  • The sun heats and evaporates water, which later falls as rain.
  • To convert this water into another form of energy, we build dams.
  • Dams increase the potential energy of the water by holding it at a higher elevation.
  • When released, this water flows and creates kinetic energy, which is energy in motion.
  • This kinetic energy drives hydroelectric turbines, generating mechanical energy.
  • Mechanical energy is then converted into electrical energy.
  • This electrical energy heats your cooker, generating heat energy.
  • You use this heat to boil water and prepare food, which provides your body with chemical energy.
  • The entire process of cooking produces waste, and some of it evaporates back into the atmosphere, continuing the cycle.

Similarly, our emotional energy cannot be suppressed. We must learn to rechannel it productively, just as water is transformed into different forms of energy.

How to Rechannel Your Energy Productively

When negative emotions strike, there is a tendency to resort to unhealthy behaviours like:

  • Alcoholism
  • Overeating
  • Oversleeping
  • Gossiping
  • Rioting
  • Isolation
  • Uncontrolled sexual activity

We all know the consequences of these actions. Instead, it’s important to choose how we rechannel our energy wisely.

If you can’t find a clear solution, direct your emotions into something constructive like your #HugWorkout. Punch that bag, lift those weights, or run that race. Physical activity can be a great way to release pent-up energy.

If you’re still struggling with your emotions, consider speaking to the Hugger’s counsellor for support.
